Fire Exit or Emergency Exit — What’s the Difference?
The terms are used interchangeably — a fire exit is simply an emergency exit designated on your building’s escape plan. One important distinction: a fire exit door is not automatically a fire-rated (fire-resisting) door. A fire exit’s job is fast, unobstructed escape; a fire-rated doorset’s job is to hold back fire and smoke.
Where your exit sits on a protected escape route or a compartment wall and must resist fire, we supply and fit fire-rated steel doorsets certified to E60 (60 minutes’ integrity) under EN 16034 — with the same panic hardware compliance as our standard exit doors.
Our emergency exit doorsets are fitted with panic bars (push bars), push pads or crash bars to suit the building and its occupants — including Briton 300 series and Exidor 500 range devices, with outside access devices available for secure re-entry.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person for a building must ensure escape routes and exits are adequate and properly maintained. Our exit doorsets help you meet that duty: panic bars tested to BS EN 1125 for public buildings, push pads to BS EN 179 where occupants know the building, and single-action escape without a key, every time.

What’s the difference between BS EN 1125 and BS EN 179?
BS EN 1125 covers panic exit devices — horizontal push bars for public buildings where occupants may be unfamiliar with the exits. BS EN 179 covers emergency exit devices — push pads or lever handles for premises where occupants know the building. We supply and fit both.
Are fire exit doors a legal requirement?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person must provide and maintain adequate means of escape. How many exits you need, and where, is determined by your fire risk assessment.
Can a fire exit door be locked?
Never against escape while the building is occupied — the door must open in a single action without a key. If you need security from outside, an outside access device (OAD) allows controlled re-entry without compromising escape.
Do fire exit doors need to be fire rated?
Not automatically. ‘Fire exit’ describes the escape function; fire rating is about resisting fire spread. Where the exit sits on a protected route or compartment line, a fire-resisting doorset may be required — we supply and fit steel doorsets certified to E60 under EN 16034.
Can an exit door open outwards over a footpath?
Escape doors should open in the direction of escape, and an outward-opening leaf must not obstruct a public footpath or escape route — recessed openings and alternative configurations solve this. Our free site survey deals with it before manufacture.
